Out of a Stump…

September 12, 2007

Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot – yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will never judge by appearance, false evidence, or hearsay. He will defend the poor and the exploited. He will rule against the wicked and destroy them with the breath of his mouth. He will be clothed with fairness and truth.
Isaiah 11:1-5

When I read about the stump I think of something that was  dead. Most stumps have been cut down from trees that were either weak or dead. We were once stumps that were dead to Christ. But the Spirit of God caused the spirit that He placed within us to sprout out from that stump into a life with Christ.

We have been called to the new Branch bearing fruit. We have the fruit of the Spirit within us. Below is a reminder of what the fruit of the Spirit is for you today. Write them on your heart for there is no law against these things:

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • goodness
  • faithfulness
  • gentleness
  • self-control

(Galatians 5:22-23)

    Hi there!

I love this post. It reminds me to take a different perspective on the stumps in my back yard. We have several little trees that were growing close to the house when we bought three years ago. We’ve cut down the trees, but each year, the stumps sprout again and end up growing as tall as the windows again.

This year, I was going to hire someone to dig the stump out and take care of it once and for all. However, the guy started the job, and then just never showed back up again! ugh….how frustrating!

I have spent all summer looking at those stumps, and dreading what is inevitable…the regrowth of new foliage.

But….after reading your post, I may just get a lawnchair, sit a while and gaze at them ESPECIALLY when I start to see green! It is exciting to know that God provides such life to so many of us “stumps” who deserve nothing but death!

    Thanks for the fresh outlook!

    In Christ,

    Julie
