Out of a Stump…
September 12, 2007
Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot – yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will never judge by appearance, false evidence, or hearsay. He will defend the poor and the exploited. He will rule against the wicked and destroy them with the breath of his mouth. He will be clothed with fairness and truth.
Isaiah 11:1-5
When I read about the stump I think of something that was dead. Most stumps have been cut down from trees that were either weak or dead. We were once stumps that were dead to Christ. But the Spirit of God caused the spirit that He placed within us to sprout out from that stump into a life with Christ.
We have been called to the new Branch bearing fruit. We have the fruit of the Spirit within us. Below is a reminder of what the fruit of the Spirit is for you today. Write them on your heart for there is no law against these things:
- love
- joy
- peace
- patience
- kindness
- goodness
- faithfulness
- gentleness
- self-control
(Galatians 5:22-23)

The Word is a Gem
September 7, 2007
Then he added, “Every teacher of religious law who becomes a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a homeowner who brings from his storeroom new gems of truth as well as old.”
Matthew 13:52
Something I read recently…
The rabbis spoke of the text being like a gem with seventy faces, and each time you turn the gem, the light refracts differently, giving you a reflection you haven’t seen before. And so we turn the text again and again because we keep seeing things we missed the time before.

What I want instead is your true thanks to God; I want you to fulfill your vows to the Most High.
Trust me in your times of trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.
Psalm 50:14-15But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.

His Spirit – Preparation
August 31, 2007
The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis 1:2His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent.
Job 26:13It is God who gives us, along with you, the ability to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, And He has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment of everything He will give us.
2 Corinthians 1:21 & 22Surely it is God’s Spirit within people, the breath of the Almighty within them, that makes them intelligent.
Job 32:8Clearly, you are a letter from Christ prepared by us. It is written not with pen and ink, but the the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on stone, but on human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:3And all of us [whoever turns to the Lord] had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like Him and reflect His glory even more.
2 Corinthians 3:18God Himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee, he has given us His Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:5
